Private John Henderson

 

The background of this man is not clear, but based on the information in his enlistment records he may have been the John Henderson born on 4 June 1902 at 68 The Wells, Londonderry, the sixth of ten children of carter and labourer John Henderson and his wife Margaret (née Robinson). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at St Columb's Wells, Londonderry, with his parents and four of his five surviving siblings.

Henderson enlisted in the cavalry at Waterford on 31 August 1918. Posted to the North Irish Horse, he was issued Corps of Hussars No.72142. He was described as being 5' 8½" tall, with a sallow complexion, dark hair and brown eyes, and a tattooed right forearm. He stated that he was 20 years old, was born in Longton, Londonderry, and worked as a ship's fireman.

Henderson was reported to have deserted from the regiment's reserve base at Antrim on 11 September 1918. It is not known if he was subsequentially apprehended.
